March 2014

Dear Parents of MBA:

The Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) for 8th grade Science only will be on Friday, March 21st. The testing time is posted on the MBA district calendar on our web site. It is imperative that students arrive to school on time and remember that once a test begins, students are not allowed to leave the test site. Please schedule appointments accordingly.

As many of you may be aware, Language Arts and Math CMTs are no longer administered. They are being replaced with the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC). These assessments will be given from April 28th to May 16th. SBAC is aligned with the Common Core State Standard (CCSS) that have been adopted by 45 states at this time. Please join me for a Principal Coffee and Conversation on March 14 from 8:00-8:30 AM at MBA, to learn more about CCSS.

In March, ASD will be involved with a fundraiser called Heavenly Hats, which benefits children suffering from cancer. All the funds raised will go to help purchase hats for the children. We will also be working on putting together a display of the photo booth pictures taken at the Valentine’s Day Dance. Permission slips will go home for students interested in purchasing any of the photos. These funds will go towards helping to revamp our outside garden area.

Students in S.C.I.T. (Student Community Involvement Team) (formerly known as SAVE) had great fun preparing for February's Valentine's Day Project, surprising every student and staff member in the school with a Valentine Heart attached to lockers, doors, walls and windows. The school was decorated beautifully making it a festive place to be during the frosty month of February. In March, the community service group will be sponsoring a St. Patrick's Day Dinner Celebration for the Senior Citizens of Somers. The event will take place on Friday evening, March 14, 2014, at the Somers Senior Center on Battle Street. Students and their families will be preparing and serving a traditional Corned Beef dinner with all the fixings, as well as Irish Step Dancing for entertainment, choreographed and performed by our own students. Spring will be a busy time for the group with events planned to aid Champ's Place, the Somers Education Foundation, and assisting at the New England Chili Cook Off before the end of the school year.

The new rotation in the Unified Arts Program will begin Wednesday, March 19th: grade 6 to Art, grade 7 to Life Skills and grade 8 to Technology. All second trimester grades will be on the next report card.

PTA will be holding a Spring Book Fair from Tuesday, March 4, through Friday, March 6, from 9AM to 2:30PM.

An MBA Teacup Auction will be held March 13th prior to the Mid-Winter Concert. Ticket sales will be from 6:30-7:00 PM. Tickets prices are: 1 ticket for $1.00; 10 for $5.00; and 25 for $10.00. The winner will be announced on Monday, March 17th. Proceeds will benefit the Somers Education Association scholarship fund, a teacher-funded scholarship for a graduating Somers High School senior pursing a teaching degree.

Below you will find the approved 2014-2015 school calendar. You will note that February vacation has been changed. School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, February 16
and 17, 2014, in honor of President’s Day and Teacher Work Day.
