May 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to reflect back on a few April events first. We have had three events that have been spearheaded by our own students. Each student came to me to discuss their idea for the school which led to a very successful Sox Cess Day fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund (Madilyn Baer), a Holocaust Assembly for 7th and 8th graders and a planting of a remembrance tree (Ava Roche) and a Dodgeball Tournament to raise funds for Veterans (Sean Gay) which will take place next month. I am very proud of the students of this school, their care and concern for others and their leadership skills.

As you can see by our May calendar, this is a very busy time of year at school. The activity calendar is beginning to fill up and the anticipation toward many events is mounting. However, it is important to remember that although students have many activities at this time of the year, they need to maintain good study habits, complete all homework, plan time, and behave appropriately.

Grade 7 and 8 Band and Chorus students will attend “Sheer Madness” in Boston, MA on Wednesday, May 1st.

The district Art Show will be held from May 2nd -15th with opening night at the Library on Thursday, May 2nd from 6-8 p.m. Please stop by and see the wonderful work our students have created this year with teachers Mrs. Koulisis and Mr. Dailey.

Grade 7class trip to Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT is on Friday May 3rd.

The week of May 6th is National Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a nice opportunity for parents and students to recognize the hard work and dedication of our teaching staff. We have a highly dedicated and professional staff which not only shows in our state scores but is evident every day in our classrooms.

The MBA Drama Club will perform “GROOVY!” on Friday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Somers High School auditorium. Please join me in congratulating our drama students and their advisor, Mr. Maciolek, for their hard work over the past few months.

Grade 8 students will visit Boston, MA on Thursday, May 16th to explore Pre-Revolutionary War sites as they relate to their reading of the book Johnny Tremain. The class will visit Old North Church and Copps Hill, admission to an IMAX movie at the Boston Museum of Science, and a Duck Boat tour.

On Monday, May 20th the grade 8 panoramic class picture will be taken in the courtyard under the oak tree at 10:00 a.m. Please be sure your grade 8 student is here for this important keepsake. An envelope will be sent home on Monday, May 6th with information for purchasing the picture.

The MBA Spring Concert will be held Tuesday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the MBA gym. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade band and chorus will perform. Our students’ musical abilities will once again be highlighted under the direction of band and choral directors, Mr. Tony Campanelli and Mr. Dan Brownell. Admission is free. We look forward to seeing you there.

On Friday, May 24th, grade 7 will be headed to Heifer International's Overlook Farm in Rutland, MA. Through this field trip students will learn about life in other countries and have an opportunity to experience a meal from a country that partners with Heifer.
