FOOD ALLERGY ALERT
Is a student in your child's class allergic to certain foods?
Parents and Guardians,
Please be aware that there may be a student in your child's class who cannot be exposed to certain foods. Homemade food items always have the potential of being cross-contaminated; for example, using a wooden spoon bearing residual peanut oil as a mixing tool for a batch of brownies might trigger an allergic reaction. As of July 1, 2011, a revised Somers Board of Education policy #5141.25 prohibits the serving of homemade food items at classroom celebrations. Commercially prepared foods served at school functions must bear their original manufacturer's label so that it can be checked by school personnel to make certain the food is safe for consumption by allergic students.
There are children with dietary allergies who also visit classrooms where no allergic students are enrolled. So please be aware of the health concerns of all our students when determining what snack to send to school with your child.
