MAJOR GOALS OF COURSE:
The emphasis of Language Arts 8 is on writing fluency and evaluating literature.
Students will be expected to apply the components of effective writing:
focus, organization, elaboration, and sentence structure variety in all
writing projects. Lessons on grammar, mechanics, and usage will be taught
in the context of writing. Higher level thinking skills will be stressed
through the analysis of plot, theme, characterization, setting, and conflict
in short stories, novels, non-fiction, poetry, selections in thematic
units, and an author study.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
Quizzes in any area of study count once and tests count twice. A mark
given on a writing project brought through the entire writing process
is a test grade and counts twice. An interpretation of marks given for
writing projects is attached. All homework will be totaled at the end
of the quarter and will count as one quiz grade.
HOMEWORK POLICY:
Homework will be assigned almost every night. Homework will be collected
the next class period unless otherwise stated. However, a final copy of
a writing project brought through the writing process will always be due
2 days after the day assigned. A grade of F will be recorded for any writing
project not handed in on time. This grade will be deleted when the final
copy is handed in at which time a grade based on the grading procedures
for essays will be given. When a student is absent, it is the responsibility
of the student to see me about the work, quiz or test missed. Have a “study
buddy” from your language class whom you may call to check on homework
and other assignments.
COMMUNICATION:
The best way to communicate with me, if at any time you have a question
or a concern, is to write a note or send an e-mail to pat.kmon.@somers.k12.ct.us.
Also, you may contact me before school by phone at 749-2270 extension
2402. Please give a phone number where you can be reached before school
or during school hours. I will get back to you by writing a response or
by making a phone call as soon as time allows.
