Enduring Understanding
– Students will understand that poems are read for pleasure,
instruction, and enlightenment.
– They will recognize the connection between the poet’s
life experience and their poetry.
– They will recognize their connection to us as individuals
and how they portray the fabric of America.
– The students will understand the purpose of imagery and
sound devices.
– The students will understand the effectiveness of creating
and designing a presentation using the technology of Microsoft Power Point.
Essential questions:
- Why read American poetry and learn
about its authors?
- Can we understand a poem without understanding the poet?
- How do we recognize a theme in a poem if there is one?
- What is the purpose of imagery, sound devices, and symbolism?
- How does a Microsoft Power Point presentation enhance or not enhance
the understanding of the material?

- Students will become a “resident
expert” on a poet they have selected.
- Students will recognize and
demonstrate poetic devices.
- Students will create their own
Poems using a historical theme and
learned poetic devices.

demonstrate appropriate use of
visual and audio options.
Assessments: Performance tasks as follows:
1. Create a Power Point presentation on an American poet.
2. Write about a subject and/or theme by their poet.
3. Identify the poetic devices used in a poem of your selection (may use
illustrations and/or text).
4. Write an original poem related to U. S. History, including meaningful
theme and poetic devices.
